The swap meet today

Yes, it was crowded, in fact there were record crowds! Last Sunday was kind of a perfect storm of it being January (folks are thinking about fish), no football games and good weather. As a vendor, I did very well, but I am also a GCCA member, and it is good for the club, too. Generally speaking, if the vendors are happy, it has been a good swap. If you don't like crowds, arrive after Noon or 1PM. It has thinned out by then, but most of the good fish are gone. You can always pre-purchase fish via our Classifieds system and pick them up after the crowds thin out.

Fair enough, I do not look at all of what it takes as you pointed out to put one of these events on. Thank you for doing so!

My intentions were not to dis the club or all the people who do put so much effort into doing such a show, rather to set the seed to try and improve the conditions. Even the one way idea would be better than yesterday. It is easier to complain about it than do something about it. I was pretty disappointed and I guess I did not think through all what it involved.

I get it that you cannot make everyone happy but there were many people vocally displaying displeasure with the crowding and they were all attendees not vendors. Hopefully there were less complainers than the ones you say were happy and enjoying it. I have never gone to the swaps before and only attended the auctions.

Fisherbri8 it is not as simple as it seems!
Not many places have a bigger space. An affordable, larger space is even harder to find. If you find bigger AND affordable then you have to find a place that doesn't freak out about all the water and heavy tanks on their nice carpet or new tile.
If we jack up the entrance fee the first thing that happens is we get accused of being money grabbers. Then we have to answer the question of will attendance drop? If it does vendors are not happy and stop coming.
Keep in mind the swaps are meant to be a fundraiser with proceeds going to fund our annual convention, "The Cichlid Classic."
There are a lot of things we as a club would like to improve about the swaps. Everyone would like more space. A lot of members would like to see a more central location. We'd love to have more predictable attendance(today was 1000+, sometimes it's more like 600).
Matt and his crew of VOLUNTEERS do a great job with what they have to work with and today was no exception.
If you feel you have the solution to some of the issues surrounding the swap I encourage you to get involved. Maybe you could make some phone calls and help search for a better venue. The club is always willing to accept help.
The truth is the club gets lots of complaints(and compliments) no matter what we do but, we see very few people willing to step forward and volunteer to help.
I challenge YOU to be the exception!

The Swap today seemed like a huge success. The weather being great and no football games that count going on probably helped. It was definately the busiest I have been to and it did make for it to be warm and tough to maneuver quickly but for someone like me, I always do a few rounds through and chat with a few of the people that I know and that is part of the fun. If this was your first time, then you definately came to one that was more of an exception than the rule.

The vendors though I know had to have had a great day today and that is great to keep them coming back and being a part of it.

Great job to Matt and the rest who volunteered their time today.

A great swap, thanks Matt. Steve, and everyone involved....a job well done....kudos

Fisherbri8, you might remember that no one can predict the turnout of these events....there good crowds, and then there are the super great crowds like today.....crowds are what it's all about....yeppers...I talked to many first time swap folks, many were young newer hobbyists....the look on their faces when they see the support that the GCCA can offer was evident...

Me, I love talking to these folks and helping them where I am able to....or pointing out one of the other members who can provide superior help on other species, etc....these functions allow more public contact than anything else....crowded aisles, yep...those aisle cloggers are folks talking with members, and vendors, to gain more knowledge about fish keeping....many of these younger folks are the future of our hobby, and the GCCA......bring me crowd any day....love it....

I was there and thought it was great crowded is good means a lot of people getting into hobbie had lots of nice fish and if you have time you can enjoy yourself no matter how big of place they get they have to sell tables to pay for it and then you get the isle and they are going to be the same size think that they need to make them one way so people are going the same direction. Also been to the on in Arlington hights was the same. But a lot of people put a lot of their own time into setting these up so people can go get some fish that are good quality and not seen every day
I think they did a great job and will continue to attend these you are not just running into these unless you make a prepaid order. And know where vendor is but looking around at all the different fish is half the fun plus seeing some guys you don't see all the time is kind of nice to sorry you had a bad time but a lot of people had a good time at 10 when it opens it is jammed but by 12 it settles down a bit but a lot of good fish are gone too sorry you had a bad time imo Gcca volunteers did a great job and I don't see many different guys and girls working them so THANK YOU Matt Steve and all others behind scenes

Way too crowded and unenjoyable. Can't you double the entry price and get a place you can actually enjoy the event? So many. Complaining and for one will never go back to that place. Aisles way too narrow.
I cannot believe with all the people doing this that a better more suitable site cannot be found.
