What can we do to make the GCCA Classic more appealing

The weekend choice has been an issue that has been debated since I have been a member.

I remember Monica Boester, ex president, mentioning the three day weekend was important because Ray Lucas needed the long weekend to be able to attend as a manufacturers rep and to deliver the massive amount of things he provided. I think Ray has retired, so it probably isnt a reason.

I have heard folks say it is too expensive. Having it at a hotel / venue means it will cost $. The cost hasnt really increased in the last 10 years, has it?

My hunch is that the more programming we do during the year - swaps, auctions, etc. crowds out the classic. In 2000, 2001 we would easily have hundreds of people. Maybe up to 3 - 400 and the auction would last well into the evening. The classic was a great place to meet folks, get cool fish, etc.A lot of that happens at swaps and auctions now. Its hard to explain to your spouse / significant other, that this is a special weekend if there are 8 - 10 other special weekends during the year.

We used to do a sit down dinner - like a bad wedding. It was expensive and I am glad we simplified it.

Advertising - has always been handled in a piss poor manner. Not trying to step on toes, but it needs to start the day after the last classic if you want folks to attend.

Times have changed. Spending another weekend in a hotel, plus traveling to a fish event is a lot of $. Folks have to ration what they spend, and we arent attracting a ton of new, young participants without outside entanglements. Once my son started playing competitive baseball, It was either fish or the diamond. I couldnt find time for both.

Does the classic cover its cost? If it does, I would lower the cost, or use some of the proceeds from swaps, etc. to subsidize it while still bringing in top speakers.

Do we give away a great swag bag? If not, why not? If you start now, you can fill a bag up to equal the registration fee.

Personally, I always thought of fish as an october - april hobby.

Is the fish show a draw anymore? If it is just locals, maybe there isnt a need anymore.

With that big aquarium show happening, is there even a need for a classic now?

The only way you can really diagnose this is to look at all the numbers from the past few years. Record keeping has never been the GCCAs strong point, so I wonder if any real comparative info is available.

Please keep the date or move it completely out of May/June timeframe. Summer is my busy time with running baseball, softball, and other outside things. But having it on Memorial Day weekend, we cancel other things so I have nothing going on Friday thru Monday so I can attend.

It was always Memorial Day weekend, crowds where great back then, people didn't have vacation/family time back then? Yes I have to agree the oca extravanganza is quite impressive but nothing like the classics of yesteryear....

I have to agree...it's not the swaps, or other events throughout the year, or the swap with the 'Classic'......it's simply the date the event is scheduled on is a major family type holiday......
Even the out of town folks aren't going to make the trek with the airports and highways clogged.

I get asked almost every year if I am going to be at the Classic. I have managed to make it down for one day a couple times. For me, it's the date. Memorial Day weekend is always very busy with family stuff, and I suspect that is true for most people. One weekend earlier could make a huge difference. Look at the OCA Extravaganza as an example. That event takes place the weekend before Thanksgiving, and it has built a huge turnout. I think that the Classic would get a lot more vendor support all weekend long if the event was not on a holiday weekend.

Look at what you did in the past that drew the crowds, last few classics were dismal....I know that the Internet (obtaining fish)prob not helping with attendance, along with the many swaps throughout the year

This year was the first time as a member to be able to make the Classic other than the auction in years past and I had a lot of fun.

The two main things though that could be addressed to make it more appealing is:

1. A different date maybe, Using Memorial Weekend can make it tough for those who do have to work on weekends because being a holiday weekend it's typically harder to request off than if it were on a non holiday weekend. Also a lot of family events and bbqs get scheduled on memorial weekend which may keep some people away.

2. There was a lot of down time in between speakers and events on Saturday of the event that it did make it a longer day and struggle to make it through the day so maybe more speakers or other options to have a little more condensed schedule for the day.

1) Drop the swap
2) more speakers
3) allow dry goods and plants in auction
4) more stuff in silent auction
5) make silent auction endings at specific times not at the end of speakers
