Wow, I hear crap from my wife and friends about my interest in the hobby (jokingly most of the time; they just don't get it), but didn't expect the negative reaction from fellow hobbyists in this forum. It's a good sign to see that I've elicited so many responses though (means there is some passion here), but I had no intentions of pointing fingers or saying things were being done incorrectly. I appreciate what the volunteers do and everything that is set up/planned (the fish room hop was a great idea and I envision having setups like those members in the near future). I have all good things to say about the GCCA and regret not becoming a part of it sooner.

I travel a lot for work though which precludes me from being more active in this organization, including attendance at meetings where I could voice my opinions/suggestions. It's just a part of life. Hence, my post in this forum section. If your auctions have proven successful, well done. It doesn't mean things can't be improved though. My seller list suggestion was merely that - a suggestion (a plausible one) to provide all auction attendees with an idea of what they can bid on ahead of time and determine if they want to make the time commitment to attend. Until then, these auctions aren't for me and potentially others as well.

You guys and gals do a fantastic job and make something that requires a lot of coordination look easy to the person who is not in the know. Thank you all for the time energy and patience that you give to keep this club active and vigorous.

Matt,
I like to ask questions too (some of these questions are more easily discussed in person). Usually after 2 minutes of conversation with members who are more experienced on the operation side a light bulb comes on for me.

One thing is that the volunteer club members work pretty hard and they do this because of the friendships in club and because they like the hobby. So keep it simple is strongly promoted.

The seller list question - for example its friday we have less the 1/3 of the people who will sell fish at the auction

Also for some people like me typically (I will be out of town) you might not know what you will be able pack. So changes happen, you kill a fish packing them. You decide not to sell a fish. You decide to sell them. You have never sold fish before etc.

As a seller lots of things in life take the priority over bagging a fish.

As a buyer I love the auctions -

I am sure you will become more active and watch how the club runs the auction.

Also the way the auctions are done at the gcca are very similar to a lot of the fish auctions through out the country.

That being said there are always ways to make things better. I like to look for ways to make thing easier for the club members.

Cheers,
Jason

Are you looking to be involved or commited
A Pig and a Chicken are walking down the road. The Chicken says, "Pig, I was thinking we should open a restaurant!". Pig replies, "What would we call it?". The Chicken responds, "How about ham-n-eggs?" The Pig thinks for a moment and says, No thanks. I'd...

Additional information: After bags start getting checked in we do allow buyers to view the bags on the tables...whereas we may not know what color is coming up first, buyers are able to view the bags. If you go through the bags and don't see what you are looking for then you would know at that point and not need to "wait around" if what you are looking for is not there.

The easiest way to keep cichlids is to convince your man that it is his hobby... He does all the work and you get all the rewards. :)

If you have a problem with something that the club or it's staff does, please feel free to contact me or show up at a meeting and voice your opinions. The forum is not the place where we do "business".

We as a club are not closed minded. We just don't like listening to individuals who sit on the sidelines and try to tell us how to do our volunteer jobs. Don't like something? Volunteer, work yourself up the ranks, and change it.

Meetings are held on the second Sunday of every month except May, September, and December. May is the 3rd week because of Mothers Day, September is the Summer Picnic (no meeting) and December is the Christmas Party (no meeting).

Thank-you

Mzielinski311, As a volunteer for almost every event the GCCA holds I, along with others, would invite you to come volunteer at our events so you can understand how it works and why it works as it has been done for 38 years.

Because MOST sellers don't register unti the last minute. Question answered.

Mzielinski311 wrote: Exactly the reactions I'd expect down to a tee. I am a paying member, which does help the GCCA in its own way, but thought a different, new perspective would help from a somewhat younger member (lower 30's). You guys should be open to that if you are representative of the organization as a whole. Everyone has to start somewhere and 12 posts or 100 shouldn't matter so that's irrelevant. Actually pretty silly. There are better ways to do things and this auction is one potential area whether you agree or not. My primary question wasn't really answered though- why is a seller list, regardless of auction order, prior to the auction out of the question?
