How crazy do you want to get with plants?

I have a planted 55 with just a standard shoplight, two 48" 40w T8's plus two 23w CFLs wedged in back pointing at my sword plants. total of 126w I think.

I wish I had more. I can grow most of the standard stuff you'd get at a pet store, including some pretty nice swords, but there are still a lot of plants I can't keep alive.

I can't grow the perfect carpet of green on the bottom like you see in some pictures. the light just doesn't penetrate enough. Stuff growing near the surface does excellent. It's not just watts per gallon. The depth of the tank and quality of the light makes a difference.

To get that magazine cover type of planted tank I think you're going to need more. Or get creative with low and medium light plants.

My dream 55 light fixture would have 2 150w MH and two or maybe four 48" T5

Just my opinion.

If there are plant guys at the swap, stop and talk to them. They'll tell you everything you need.

I want to start a nice planted tank and have looked at a few plants online that suggest at least 3 watts per gallon of water. I have a 55 gal with two T5 bulbs 54w ea. (104w total) the lighting looks great but will it support the plant life? 3 watts per gal would be 165 w for my 55 gal.
