As a matter of fact, was at a LFS, won't mention the name, but the had a whole tank of small oscars with ich.  There were like 20 of them!  They all will probably die.  They weren't doing anything about it!

I hate ich!  I've lost good fish in the past to ich!  I never buy fish from LFS anymore because of it.

Be careful when treating ich as some strains are particularly dangerous.

I believe there are multiple strains. There is a so-called "Super Ich" which strikes unbelievably fast and does not respond to garden variety treatments.

I had a case of that recently . . . I think. My normal treatment fo 1TBS salt per 5 gallons and QuickCure did not cure the fish, even after three treatments.

I eventually treated the tank with Clout which did the trick.

Mike is right. The UV sterilizer will kill the ich parasite, but the parasite has to flow through the sterilizer first. As the majority of the parasite is substrate bound and only free swimming for a short while the sterilizer isn't going to do a whole lot for ya.

Keep up the temps and salt for at least a week or 2 after the cysts disappear off of the fish and this should eradicate the parasite.

the uv only kills that which flows through it.  The water contains very little bacteria.  Thats why when you set up a new tankt he important thing is to use a seasoned filter.  almost all of your bacteria sits on / in the substrate and doesnt flow through the uv sterilizer.

dont stop the salt or the heat.  the little bugs are free swimming and need to be eradicated.  Time is needed.
