popeye - and not the sailor

9 years 5 months ago #25406 by whetfish
Ray - Any idea on how the popeye started?

I have a moba that just got popeye...  He is in a 125 with 16 other moba.  A day or two before the popeye presented he got very dark and was just hanging out on his own(the rest of the moba pretty much school).  None of the other moba show any signs of stress.  Last water change(50%) was a week ago.

I've moved popeye into a 10g tank, covered the tank, added salt.

I don't know much about this species but with all of my guys I don't medicate unless I have to. First option is double dose of salt and frequent water changes.

Hope he pulls thru.

none. i only got the 2 westies and the awesome apisto from you. the apisto is doing great in the 33 long tank with 2 male cacatoides, 2 female cacs, 6 cory nanas, 7 male guppies and 2 farlowella cats.

the other humillis is in a 5 gallon tank by him self although i didnt see him eat tonight but when i walked away there was brine shrimp floating in the tank still.

i covered the tank with 2 towels to black it out. i have a bucket of tap water sitting out with dechlor in it and an airstone running to age the water so i can do a good size WC tomorrow night on both westie tanks.
i feel bad about this because i know how much sam loves westies and i already promised these 2 fish to him after the April bowl show and dont want to give him a f---ed up fish.

Keep the tank dark.  Cover it with a towel if needed.  I'd like to know what's going on just so something like this doesn't happen again!  Did any of the other fish that you got that came from me show any signs of problems?

his eye is much worse today than it was last night. i'll continue to do water changes and lay off the meds.

popeye isnt fatal, but he could lose the eye.

Replied by mduros on topic popeye - and not the sailor
Primary cause of popeye is poor water conditions.  Figure out what it is about your water that is irritating the fish.  I am betting that aquaticclarity hit the nail on the head.
Take care,
Mary.

i removed about a gallon of water and replaced it with bottled drinking water which will soften up the water. i will continue to medicate with the marcyn and do water changes daily

He may be reacting to chroline/ammonia present in the tap water???  I had him in a mixed species tank that had my well water (7.6pH/300ppm) in it.  He had been there for a few months.  Possibly reducing the amount of disolved minerals/chemicals in the water would help.

Sorry to see this happen to him!

Jeff

this is a wild male pelvicachromis humillis "killi river" after adding him to a 15 gallon tank with a female pulvicachromis pulcher he started to develop pop eye. it didnt help that the "community friendly" pulcher kept attacking one of his eyes which i assume is the worse of the two.

i have since removed him to his own 5 gallon tank with a sponge filter diffused by an airstone. i added marcyn to the tank, a 10 gallon dose monday night and some epsom salt. did nothing tuesday but feed (he ate), and did about 1 gallon water change and added more marcyn.

what else can i do? what else do you guys do? is there any saving this fish?
