I am *really* loving my new automatic system. Water goes in slow and it doesn't seem to be a problem. My five biggest tanks are now on an automatic system and that saves me about an hour a week on water changes.
I'll have to write about my new system for the Chatter.

Sounds great. Would love to hear about it. One of the things I love about this hobby is the tinkering. Being able to make a system (either air or water) work better. I greatly enjoy figuring out how things work in our fishrooms and possibly how to make them work better.

I would love to see or hear about it also, since I still have plumbing work to do downstairs I could include it in the plumbing plans cuz i'm tired of workin like a Neanderthal

The microbubbles aren't caused by water cavitation. Cold water-- it is 35F out of my tap today-- keeps many more dissolved gases in solution when under pressure. Once released into your tank, the pressure drops and the temperature rises and they come out of solution.
My bad I misread the article on the web about cavitation.

I'm actually not a big fan of any of the products which purport to help the slime coat, with the exception of Tetra Aquasafe. In winter, I believe these products trap microbubbles and lead to microbubble intoxication.
When shipping, I usually bag with AquaSafe and have good results. The slime coat protection can be a good thing after netting. Just make sure you let the bubbles come out of the water before adding the product, then stir well.

Thats interesting, I wouldn't think that a slime coat replacer would hold microbubbles in suspension. I will have to keep an eye out for that. I have found that if I fill my tanks with water that is slightly warmer than what is in the tanks I don't get the microbubbles caused by the water cavitating.

doh! :
Heres the site:

That is interesting. I wish it covered the efficacy of any of the products. A while back, GCCA Member and Tetra rep Chuck Templeton did some tests by adding pure ammonia to water samples and seeing how well each dechlorinator/ammonia remover worked. I don't know if the methods demonstrated were ideal or not, but he did make the case for his own products.
I'd love to see products actually lab tested.
I keep two dechlor products in my fishroom (other than samples I get from GCCA from time to time):
- A basic, cheap dechlorinator
- An ammonia remover
I've used a lot of dechlor products and I think they all do the job pretty well.
For everyday water changes, I use the cheap dechlor, which is Won Dechlor ( www.jehmco.com ) . My village never adds Chloramine (few in Chicago do), so I don't need an expensive product.
I use Amquel (or similar) when I have a sudden, ammonia spike which can happen when I have a fish die or when I notice a power filter has been off for a while. It's a delay tactic until I can do a water change.
