Fish Floating For 2 Weeks!

9 years 4 months ago #25766 by unklebilly
Hey, Sawboy! YOu saved my fishes life. I just threw a towel over the tank and bumped the temp up slowly. Two days later he is perfectly fine! No meds just epsom although I had used meds previously and im sure they were still partially in the water. He was going on three weeks with this and I had been treating in one way or another so maybe it was a coincidence but I would definitely go straight for this method again if it ever came up. He is a very durable fish so I think the darkness and isolatio nwere key to allow for him to fight whatever it was on his own.

You can try it without the meds,  but they have a wound healing effect as well. I just know what worked for me. Your fish, your call.

I have put a pvc pipe in there but i can't get him to go in it. Instead of egg crate I will use an acrylic panel and raise the temp slow like. WOuld it be ok to avoid the meds?

Egg crate will tear him up BIG time. Use PVC pipe. When my front did this I had success with following:

Raise temp to 84
Melafix per label directions
BIG air stone for aeration
Total darkness, as in tank covered with dark towel.

One week like this saved my big guy. The key is to not put him back in the situation that stressed him to bloat in the first place.

He is a titanium flowerhorn. I have a flower pot in the tank that he doesn't seem to use anymore like he was in earlier stages. Maybe a pipe would be less abrasive for him. I was thinking of suspending some egg crate just below the surface of the water so he could never surface. Should I just maintain an average temp? Is deflating something possible for me to do myself?

What kind of fish are we talking about?  I had a frontosa with a similar problem.  I removed him, put him in his own tank, gave him a pipe he could stay submerged in, used some epsom and little food.  If this doesn't work you may have to deflate.  Isolation, darkness and the something keeping him submerged are key.

My fish has been floating for over a week. his abdomen is now become distended. His dorsal is beginning to dry out.
I have tried fasting
green peas
epsom salt
metro
what can I do?
should I bring the temp up?
DOes he need his swim bladder deflated by a vet?
