Something worthy trying is to net the fish out and swab the lips with mercurochrome.

I haven't tried that, but I knew an old timer that swore by this method for ulcers, mouth rot, etc.

I have had maybe some success with my method but still am deep in the forest. I have read more useful blogs and seen pics describing this uncharted disease. It seem to affect trimacs and other like fish but not limited to. Hope a few can learn from others misfortunes. I propose a financial pool fed by aquaria enthusiasts towards the scientific research and development of treatments against some of the longtime styes in the hobbies side. I mean really, how many invaluable fish have succumb to little known diseases such as this one? I only wish I had the equipment and knowledge to examine these instances more profoundly.

I think you are right. it's like cotton mouth but behaves a little different in flowerhorns. I have the temp in low 70's and am treating with meth blue dip and a prescription strength metranadezole as well as salt in a hospital tank. I have crushed the pill and am adding little bits to the water every day. Is this the correct way? I have read that it is not water soluble but the person I got it from claims to have had success with it. I think the pill is originally intended as an antibiotic for humans. Thanks for your help.

Never heard of this before this tread. After a little research (about 5 min on google) this appears to be a problem for Flowerhorns. Reading on I find out that it is some sort of super mouth rot and that there really isn't a treatment out there that works more than some of the time. One thing that seems to be universal in treatment is to lower the heat in the tank. My guess is to slow down the spread and make it managable.

I would start with typical fungas meds and heavy salt. Take the temp down slowly to avoind shocking the fish. If he/she isn't the only individual in the tank I would seriously thing about isolating this fish until all sighs of infection are gone.

Hope this helps.

I have a fish with what has been described as "ducklips" and is known too be extremely fatal. I believe it is bacterial. Does anyone know anything about this? I have already lost one fish to this before. Last time I discovered it after returning from vacation when the fish was unable to feed for several days. Same case this time as I got back from thanksgiving for a couple days. I think maybe the fish too violently digs through the substrate and gets an infection. PLease help I would hate to lose another one due to this rare and bizarre disease.
