He also sort puts his belly in the opening on the entrance to the cave...

The male started to do this to the comp that was being ignored last night... Hopefully eggs are being laid...

I hope the two have formed a pair...It'd be great!  I will keep an eye on them.  I have a white LED headlamp...any reason for LED and not just a flash light?

The fish with lock jaw got while in a 55 with two other equally sized comps(2.5") ...and I hadn't and haven't seen any comp on comp aggression in there.

The only time i got some comp on comp aggression is when I added the largest fish(male) into a tank where territories had definitely been established....I watched to see how the fish reacted, pulled two fish i suspected were males and then created new territories.

I am still not 100% that the (large) female is indeed a female.

It appears that she is!  You almost certainly have at least one pair.  If this weather continues, you will have a spawn soon.  If you have an LED light, see if there are already eggs.  This is common behavior for a male to preside over a female nesting a clutch.

With some of the size differential between your comps, continue to keep an eye of for brutal territoriality.  Equal-sized fish can go at it for hours on end, which is what I fear might fear could have injured your fish.

Is the comp with the jaw issue a smaller fish?  How is its behavior in relation to the rest?  More male-like or female-like?  Comp and calvus jaw issues that I have seen have usually been females.

I haven't seen any territorial squabbles in popin' & lockin's tank.  But as I mentioned to you(Steven) I added a male to the A squad tank and pulled some suspected males out.  Things got a little heated in there, nothing too crazy but there was a definite change in behavior.  I then re-arranged the tank to set up new territories.  The large male pays a lot of attention to a suspected (large) female.  The big male will literally just do a little tripod outside her cave while she is in it.  He also sort puts his belly in the opening on the entrance to the cave...I assume that's breeding behavior but I am still not 100% that the (large) female is indeed a female.  The male and the large female do a lot of what i call barking at each other.  Comps "nipping" looks like barking to me.  Anyhow there is also another thought to be female in the tank that's smallest in the tank and is basically ignored by the two larger comps.

I have found this to be very common with wild comps and calvus.  In many cases, I have seen fish stuck this way for life.  They can still eat and breed as normal.

It may be a result of something being broken... are your fish showing any territoriality?  When they fight, they REALLY go at it.  It is a sight to see.

Oh I see it now...that is funny.  My wife wants to call the fish " Poppin' & Lockin'"  I said only if it manages to figure out how to eat and survive.

I had to extend and then push it back into the closed position, but the Petenia was @ 10", so it may have been simpler for me. It may have only been dislocated, if broken...
Sometimes you eat the bar, and well....sometimes the it,  eats you.
