power loss

My power came back on Wednesday at around noon, but then went out again at 6:15 Thursday night and stayed off until Friday afternoon.

I have an alarm that automatically calls my cell phone when the power goes out- it's a Reliance Controls THP-202.  It called me Thursday night while I was at work, so I was able to come home and start up the generator again before anything bad happened.  Some of my most heavily populated fry boxes would get dangerously oxygen depleted if their air-driven lift tubes stopped working for more than half an hour.

It's very reassuring to have an alarm like this- I used to worry about whether the power was out at home whenever there were storms or lots of wind while I was somewhere else.  I got a slightly used one on eBay for $25, but new ones are available on Amazon for $67.  Amazon's unit is the Reliance THP-201, which has an additional water sensor to detect flooding.  When it calls you, there's a sequence of beeps and a robot voice that tells you what the beeps mean- power outage, temperature below 45 degrees, or flooding if your unit has a water sensor.

Lost most of my ram fry and and a couple little compressiceps,  A few others I can't find may just be hiding.

Had two ten gallon tanks go the whole week with no filtration or air at all.  About a dozen fry survived in each, no sign of any bodies.  I think all my snails may have helped-  got rid of the dead before they got really nasty.

Definitely time to look into a backup system

I've been out of town, had someone coming every other day just to feed and top off water. Supposedly everything is still alive. I hear power was out for a good 36 hours,  I get back tomorrow.  Hopefully don't come home to a bunch of rotten fish soup.

I have HOB filters on most tanks.

I know some of my older HOBs don't start back up without help. The ones that did start up probably dumped some nasty water when they got going.

This could be a mess. :'(

we were with out power from Monday 9:30am till Wednesday 4pm...Fired up the honda eu2000 that I had picked up a few weeks ago to replace a super loud craftsmen.  We were able to run 2 lph12's to keep the fish happy, fridge, freezer, a few fans and a few lights for 10 hours on 1 gallon of gas.  Pretty sure I could have hooked up the tv and the ehimes but didn't want to push it. Only trip the breaker once when both sump puck kicked on.

I was running on generator power for 52 hours.  Without it, I would have lost half my fish, all the food in the fridge and freezer, and I would have had no running water since I'm on a well.  I'm glad I had a generator instead of just a battery backup system or an inverter for the car..

Shawn is on target - do not let a canister turn back on if your power has been off for more than a few hours.  Empty it out and rinse the media - then turn it back on.  This is especially true if the tank is infested with snails.  They get in the canister and die off very quickly without fresh water / O2.

I learned the hard way.

Sponge filters should be good for a couple of days at least, as long as they are still in the tank. HOB filters are probably less time and canisters are only good for a few hours.

My power was out from about 8am to 4:45pm on Monday.  I had done a water change on my 330g Sunday night so I've let that go so far.  On my other three tanks(2x125g, 65g) I did a 50% water change that evening around 8pm.  None of my tanks are overstocked imo and they all have bunch of sponge filters.

No losses, everything seems fine.  The only question that came to mind was:

How long would a sponge filter stay seeded if regular water changes are done durring a power outtage?

Not checked for facts.
