Yep. Or you can try the Madagascan ones, which I've never had. They are really cool fish, but a bit tougher to get and a little harder to keep.

Gentle tilapia species. Rainbows work great. So do larger danios. As far as other cichlids, it can be tough because the ptychochromis are pretty docile.

What other fish could be kept with these in say a 125g tank?? Sounds interesting and will have an open tank soon. Just with a tank like that, I'd like to keep more than just 1 type of fish in there.

They just suck at defending their eggs, and will sometimes eat them.

will they eat the fry once hatched, or will they parent them

You don't need to. They will breed with other fish in the tank, but the chance of them raising the fry is slim. You can always artificially hatch them.

Yeah, give them a try. All the madagascan show cool behavior unique among cichlids, I say start with a fish of the Ptychromis, as they are the easiest to breed, and easiest to manage the aggression of.
