I am getting some brauschi next week, does anyone have any experience with these?  Any advice for me?  This is my first time with these fish.  Anything would be appreciated.

Breed them small. The larger they get the nastier. 4-6 inch males tend to enjoy becoming show fish  Wink. They off the males first, then females.

I believe this is one of the few Fwa fish left in the hobby. The story I heard about the Fwa region (other than political turmoil) is that it has a waterborne sleeping sickness. Not sure if that's true for Fwa, but I believe it is.

Very pretty fish though. I'd love to get some fry if you spawn them.

Just curious, is your advice from experience or research?  I have read they are nasty fish and very hard on one another, but leave other tank mates alone.  I'll do my best to breed them.  I am getting a group of 9.  I am sure it will be male heavy.  They are 2-3 inches long right now, with 3 coloring up with red.

Water borne sleeping sickness. . .whoa. Shocked
I was hoping to find some T. buysi.  I saw these in Cichlid news awhile back.  Sounds unlikely though from your info.

Experience. Got them a few times at the shop and worked with them doing cleaning/hatchery work for a guy. They are brutal, but very pretty (In my opinion). I personally would add another species or two as a buffer. An mbuna would probably work well.

Like I said, not sure on the sleeping sickness, but I believe that is the case with the Fwa area.

You may be able to get Buysi. They have populations Buysi or a very similarly looking and related fish in Germany. Those aren't actually from the Fwa region, but close to South Africa. Not sue of the countries they inhabit, but it is south of the DRC. I don't know why those aren't being collected. I believe the habitat they are found in is a river in a savannah, not sure though. Probably they aren't being collected is there is probably not a lot to collect and it is not very accessible. I don't know if those countries have political issues and violence in the region, but it is quite possible that the area the Buysi are found in is not safe to go to.

Absolutley gorgeous fish, but they have definelty earned their repuatation.  I had a group of 7 in a 55.  A male claimed each end of the tank and they slaughtered the 3rd male who hung out in the middle.  I had no problems with the females.  They freely floated back and forth between the terrotories and were not bothered.  Females are worth their weight in gold.  Seems like most folks get male heavy groups and lose the extra males and few females.  I have a small group coming up right now.  7 fish between 1-2" and starting to see some nice color on some males already

I've also heard about them being male heavy. Maybe it has something to do with the water like in Apistos or Pelvicachromis?

My group was male heavy, probably 7-2, slightest possibility of 6-3.  They are currently in a 125g.  We'll see what happens.

Here's some pics of the dominant male.

And here is a subdominant male trying to color himself up.

They seem settled in well.  Just keeping my fingers crossed for a spawn.
